Charing Cross Station has a long and interesting history since its opening in 1864. In the 19th century, the station was called “the Gates of the World”, used as a terminus for boats connecting the UK with mainland Europe. Nearby was the birthplace of the internationally renowned Thomas Cook travel agency.
